Basically I've been considering buying a tablet for about 6 months/a year. I have always been one of those anti Apple guys and swore they would never get a penny of the vast Benteke fortune, but the iPad mini with retina looks decent. Basically it's the full iPad Air, same specs but smaller in size and I wasn't looking at 10 inch tabs anyway, wanted the Nexus 7 originally but cos I have the Nexus 4 it feels too similar and I don't want my phone to feel redundant if I got the N7. So I don't think I will get that.

Tablet will be used mostly for the viewing of documentaries and films & the iPad mini looks better for that. Bit of browsing t'internet too. Don't need a 3G model as I've got my phone.

Basically from what I've read online and saw on reviews:

Internet browsing - equal
Build - iPad
Videos - iPad
Customisation - N7
Value for money - N7
Battery - iPad
Specs - N7 (I've also noticed Apple's products are not equal to contemporary rivals, the iPhone 5s has exactly the same spec as the Galaxy S2 which is 3 years older, all current flagship rivals being released with dual core/octa core processors)
Apps - iPad
Gaming - iPad
OS - Dunno, not used iOS but apparently iOS 7 is not as good as the previous version

Basically the iPad seems overpriced but better, N7 - best bang for buck 7 inch tab.

?
I've had both an iPad and a Nexus 7 and I ended up selling the Nexus because besides reading, I found doing things on the Nexus 7 to be very hard. I think a tablet really does need to be 10" in order to be useful for other things. My first gen iPad is starting to get pretty dated but for the things I use it for (Netflix, ebooks, comics, basic browsing, etc.) it does the job just fine.

I'd honestly give the Microsoft Surface a look. You can attach a full keyboard to it and use it just like a laptop so it becomes far more portable and I have a feeling Windows 8 becomes bearable if you use it for what it was actually designed for.
