I saw the Slits in 1981 and they were a lot better than their early recordings. Ari Up formed the Slits when she was just 14 years old and by the time I saw them she was around 20 years old. She was a very charismatic performer and the Slits had improved greatly since 1976.
The Slits were really the first London punk band to explore reggae music and they did a killer version of the Dennis Brown song
The Man Next Door. Here's a live version of that song from that 1981 tour. BTW that's Nenah Cherry in the video singing background and do all those wild dances with Ari Up.
I was sad to hear that Ari Up died in 2010. She inspired many female British musicians like Polly Styrene, Alison Statton, Leslie Woods, Siouxsie Sioux, Lara Logic and Nenah Cherry.
