My Invincible Review!!!
I dont care what anyone says or thinks about MJ! I love him and this was such a underrated album. It wasn't his best effort compared to past previous releases but this did have a few gems that were criminally underrated.
Highlights: Unbreakable, Break of Dawn, Butterflies, Speechless, Whatever Happens, Heaven Can Wait, Threatened
1. Unbreakable- this was a great album opener, VERY strong. MJ originally wanted this to be the lead single but SONY released "You Rock My World" as the lead instead. Unbreakable is good lyrically and I think is a good motivational song. It has modern production that mimics the times but it is not overdone. I think this song aged pretty darn good. Fun fact: Brandy sings background vocals!
2. Heartbreaker- Production is to overdone and lyrics are generic
3. Invincible- similiar issue with the above
4. Break of Dawn- THIS IS HANDS DOWN THE SEXIEST SONG EVER MADE!!!! If this song was released as a single it would have been a instant R&B classic. I think this was one of the best vocal performances Michael did in his last decade. Michaels vocals are clean and soulful. The production is sexy, smooth and reminds you of that old schoo MJ R&B sound i.e Off The Wall . This was my favorite from the album
5. Heaven Can Wait- originally was meant for Blackstreet but was given to MJ. I really like this song because it is not a song I would have pictured MJ doing. It has that late 90's grown and sexy R&B feel. It is not as good as Break of Dawn but it was a nice slow R&B groove. If you like Jodeci, Blackstreet, Brandy's 90s output etc then you will like this song.
6. You Rock My World This song is not one of the stronger cuts but its a nice R&B dance song. Its catchy but I wouldn't call it one of the best on the album. The music video is dope though.
7. Butterflies- LOVE THIS SONG, CLASSIC! MJ hooked up with Floetry for this cut and they made magic! Michaels vocals are sexy as hell and soulful. He is sanging on this song. This is probably MJ's most neo soul song to date. The production is crazy good and Marsha Ambousia's vocals in the background are a treat. I wish he could have did more collaborations with her.
8. Speechless- Michaels delivers another stellar vocal performance and shows why he is one of the best pop singers of all time. I think the lyrics are kinda cheesy but he sings them so good that you forget about that. The production is soft but really good here. I like how he layered his vocals.
9. 2000 Watts- I like the fact that Michael is singing deeper here but I never cared for this song.
10. You Are My Life- Another cheesy song about the love of his children but since it is sincere I dont mind. This song is not horrible but one of the weaker ones
11. Privacy- I like this song and Michaels raspy singing but he has done similiar songs in the past that were far more better ex. Leave Me Alone, Tabloid Junkie, etc.
12. Don't Walk Away- His singing is beautiful but another weaker one that should have been cut
13. Cry- never cared for this song
14. The Lost Children I actually liked this song although its cheesy. It has a good message and I like the production.
15. Whatever Happens One of MJ's greatest songs in his catalogue. He hooked up with Carlos Santana for this one and created another magical jam! I loved the salsa inspired theme, Michaels vocals are on point and the production is crazy!!!!
16. Threatened- This was one of my favorites all this album. The production is eclectic and Michaels vocals are hard and mean (love it!) The beat is catchy and funky!!
MJ does not write as much on this album like he does on his previous releases... and it shows. Majority of his best material and hits were written and produced by himself. I think he became insecure artistically the last decade of his life which is why he collabed more on this album. Overall, the album is actually not that bad compared to what critics gave it. Most of the outtakes are better than some of the songs that made the album. The album was tooo long. If 7 of the songs were cut it would have been a much stronger album.
