It started with the mysterious vanishing of planes in the area. It's like the fish that got away and the story grew, and the explanation leaned more and more into realm of the para-normal, like time portals, or planes being intercepted by USOs (Unidentified Submersible Objects) etc etc. One scientific explanation about disappearance of airplanes was there are fissures under that part of ocean that release methane gas and when the planes flew through the methane gas it caused engine trouble and they flamed-out and crashed. Another explanation was anomalies in the Earth's magnetic field that causes instrumentation failure.
