The trick is to stop alcoholism in its tracks, resolve the triggers, and get those people on the right track. I'd consider the proper punishment to be "tough love".

Sorry to hear about your grandpa. Good on you for taking care of your dad. He really needs help, though, and I hope he's able and willing to get it. Alcoholism is horrible.

My grandpa has been an alcoholic his whole life. I have no idea how he's still alive. He hasn't had a drivers' license in over 10 years because he knows full well he's just gonna screw up again.
