Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres
This 2011 album is one of the best modern free (not sure if actually free or if it just has similar syntax) jazz albums out there. Matana plays sax in a manner that you would imagine the lovechild of Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders to sound, and she also sings phenomenally. At times she bursts into intense shrieking over sporadic melodies that send chills down my spine. This album has a lot of range, and it is definitely a unique listen for the invested jazz listener.
