In the 70s my parents backpacked from the UK through Europe into the Middle East then through Persia and Pakistan into India and back again. I tried a similar trip myself in the 90s and only made it as far as Jordan/Syria as it was too difficult and dangerous to go any further. Border crossings are much tighter these days, and the level of hostility towards citizens of countries like the UK and US has increased. The world's got a lot smaller with ease of travel BUT hell of a lot harder to move abroad due to the masses of paperwork and rules etc. Backpacking like you did, can't say as I'm not that cracked in the head to go backpacking in the Middle-East
