The world (noun): Our planet, made up of various landmasses, on which are separate countries. Between these landmasses are seas, oceans etc.

America (United States of) (noun): One landmass, one of the largest in the World (see above)

Maybe Big Bird can explain it. Imagine the big bowl as American football (or America) and the others as "European" football, or even just the rest of the world...
