I think it matters because most sports are enjoyed outside either their country of origin or the one acknowledged to be the best at it. Other than GAA and hurling. And camogie. And just about every indigineous Irish sport.
But baseball, basketball, American Football and so on are pretty much US-only interests, and few people outside of America care about them. I mean, come on: the "World Series"???
