Nu-Metal was part of that bizarre trend on the part of corporate america wherein they specifically targeted "misfits". So, you had television shows filled with bizarre characters who were somehow super-duper awesome but no one around them realized it, and a wide variety of music targeting a particular kind of misfit. This music was supposed to grant super powers or something. So, if you listened to Radiohead, by association you were deep & melancholic, KoRn made you tough and badass, No Doubt made you a tuff grrrrlll... etc.
KoRn & nu-metal in general were just a little too successful. You see, as it turns out, music doesn't magically transmogrify the listener. So, nu-metal quickly became associated with young people dressed very loudly & very poorly, among a host of other negative associations. You can argue whether or it was deserver, but as a musical form that was marketed so much as a lifestyle, it was inevitable.
