His knowledge of history is terrible, which explains his inability to note larger trends.
The South flipped because, as had been observed in the early 20th century, people only approve of social benefits when they're benefiting those with the same worldview as their own. Hence why Theodore Roosevelt (amongst others) were so vigorous in busting political machines. Now, obviously, Southern Whites followed in this tradition, as do todays Liberals:
