You may say prog isnt popular enough, but hell, isnt that good enough a reason to make a prog forum? To teach others about less popular genres of music? I dont see prog being any less popular or "un-hip" with kids nowadays than say classical music. Its certainly a credible genre, more than pop for sure...Prog isnt dead, its no where as popular as it was in the 70s, but it still has a very loyal following of fans from around the world, there are still many active prog movements in many different countrys, including the US, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Japan, Germany and Sweden...It would be a big step for this forum in expanding tastes and being a much more diverse site for music dicussion. You could get kids into new music and attract new forum members in the process. Prog is a very special genre in rock, and it has just as many sub-genres as metal and punk if not more. Many bands today incorperate prog elements in their music, like Sigur Ros, Mars Volta, Arcade Fire, Coheed and Cambria, Muse and many others. The reason i make this a issue is because if someone wants to make a prog related thread, they should have a proper place to put it. I was gonna make a Yes appreciation thread once, but i didnt know where to put it, weither to post it on the general music forum or the rock and metal forum, either way it would have felt too out of place, so that had me thinking. Sure you could say that prog is a part of rock so prog threads should just be posted on the rock and metal forum, but punk is a part of rock too, and it has its own forum, indie rock has its own forum. Why should they get their own forums and not prog?
as much as i love prog, i think it in itself is merely a sub-genre of many different genres - not a genre in itself if you get me. its far too varied to have a forum erected in its behalf, we'd have punk fans, rock fans, metal fans, jazz fans, indie fans etc etc etc all converging into one big debate- which i was of the opinion is the main problem we have with forums at the moment anyway...
now a sub-forum woul be quite dandy, though again where would it be put? you'd hhave to have one for each forum as lets face it, every genre of music has its innovative, original bands that progress and push the boundaries of what can be done musically within the generic scope.
