As someone has pointed out, it's usually not the cream of the crop who compete in Eurovision. The whole thing has a certain cheesyness associated with it. It's generally not cool to be a participant on Eurovision, although I have to say its image seems to have improved quite a bit the last few years.
At least that's how people feel about it in Norway. Our contestants are often artists who have failed to break through using the normal channels or who used to be popular, but have failed to maintain their popularity. This year's artist representing Norway, Margaret Berger, was a contestant in norwegian Idol in 2004. She released her latest album in 2006 and has been fading from the public eye ever since.
I think she's cute and talented and hope she manages a comeback, but her story in this day and age's Eurovision is rather typical, I think.
