I would disagree with that statement. The late '80s had something for everyone. If you wanted Alternative Rock, you had bands like The Pixies, Nirvana, and Mudhoney. Do you like Metal? If so, Metallica, Slayer, and all the other Thrash bands had you covered. Want to listen to rap? This was the era of The Beastie Boys, NWA, and other influential rappers. Not to mention bands like Guns 'n' Roses were huge during that time. No matter what you listen to, the late '80s have you covered.

I'm just slowly getting into metal this past year (surprisingly) and discovering late 80s/mid 90s stuff so I guess you've got me there - I'm just unfamiliar. My expertise is in the 60s/70s.
