It kind of always was Chick Corea's band.
Return to forever just happened to be the name of the project, for a lack of a better way of putting it. The first Return to forever album is actually a Chic Corea album with the title
Return to Forever, and all subsequent albums except the last two,
Romantic Warrior, and
Musicmagic feature a byline that says "...featuring Chic Corea", or "...and Chick corea". It's kind of like how The Jazz Messengers were always Art Blakey's band. In the same manner, Mahavishnu Orchestra was unofficially John McLaughlin's band, although the album titles never referred to it as such.
