I think the best era of rock was the 60s, rock did alot of growing up during the 60s and got into more serious issues...
Sometimes the 70s music just kind of kills the idea of Rock N' Roll...which is supposed to be derived from the blues...
I think the guitar has been over used and has dampened "Rock" and all it's sub genres...

And most over-rated band in my opinion is Nirvana.
I agree.

Rock n Roll is very much the Blues offsping. Rock n Roll was more of societal blip. People were getting sick of the racial tension and the lack of freedom. As soon as rock n roll came about, people such as Elvis started praising black bluesmen, which back in the 50's would have been a pitchfork to the stomach if you weren't famous, like Elvis.
It did change, all these new activists rights came in in the 60's, some form of contraceptive was introduced. Rock n Roll changed from being an expression of freedom, to rock, a harder line, exploring various things that rock n roll didn't cover.

But i won't agree with guitar killing the origins. Guitar is merely evolution. It's todays version of the harmonica.
