Harmon found out he wasn't working on the show anymore via twitter AFAIK. I would be surprised if the reason was anything but friction between Harmon and the network over the direction of the show (ratings never really got any better, even though the show was consistently excellent).

Wow seriously? That's pretty lame I didn't know he got fired over Twitter. NBC has no balls. And yes the show always was consistently awesome the first 3 seasons. This season may be it's curtain call and it will be a shame to see it end on such a low note.
Here's to hoping for a Troy and Abed spin off directed by Harmon in the future.
