The first two-three hours of it (or perhaps a little more, it's been a while), you create your own species and develop them into an advanced civilization. Then the game really gets started and it becomes a sort of strategic space management game where you conquer planets, fight off invaders and try to make your way to the center of the galaxy. You get to design space ships and move species from one planet to another f.ex to prevent ecological disasters about to happen.
It's a game that does perhaps a bit much and so becomes a little shallow in the main sort of gameplay parts, but it's still a lot of fun, I think.

The second game, which is pretty much the exact same style - only more of everything, is also great.
