I didn't bother with Neon Bible since I wasn't interested in the band, but then The Suburbs caught my attention when I learned it was written about the particular suburb of Houston that I used to live in, and spent the second half of my teens in. And to my surprise, great album and not nearly as whiny as Funeral. I've since downloaded and listened to Neon Bible but only once or twice, hasn't quite grabbed me yet but I also didn't find it painful.

It might have sounded whiny because the band as a whole lost like nine family members during the recording process. That'll make anybody sound whiny.
