To my admittedly limited understanding of the proposals made by Leveson, his final recommendation was for statutory regulation of the press, which is a bad idea on the freedom of the press front. The last thing this country needs is for the Government to have control of the press.
The Press Complaints Commission (the regulatory body which failed so spectacularly) didn't have the resource or remit to hold the Press to account, the proposals for the new body should change that.
One of the greatest things that Leveson has done, is given the victims of phone-hacking a chance to have their stories heard, and to bring forward into the public eye the shameful behaviours of the press which was so scarcely reported on for obvious reasons.
I don't think it was a waste of time or money, nor do I think his recommendations should be put into action.
On the large part, we have a fantastic press.
