I think high quality headphones can be fine to listen to, and some can compete with high quality speakers.

As for what I do whilst listening to music, it changes from time to time: I might be on my computer, with friends, going to sleep (nice jazz is perfect for this), travelling on the train or just lying down, solely listening to the music. It all depends.
