OK then , you`ve probably seen my Urban 100 and this is along those lines but a little different.
Basically , I think it`s time we started enhancing each others lives with things that have given us pleasure in our own lives , so this is what I propose to do.
The Cool 100 is basically going to be a list of 100 various Movies , Books , TV Shows , Albums & Video Games. Each of you nominate one of your favourites in any of those catagories and write a little bit about it & what makes it so great.And lets see if we can get 100.
I`ve seen people constantly bitching about this place ,about the flaming , the pointless threads and all the rest of it. Well in that case help contribute to this , share some of your passions & try & check out some of the recommendations in it.
And for God sake please don`t let this thread die on it`s arse.
Anyway i`ll start this off with .........
100. Withnail & I
This is one of my favourite comedies of all time.It`s about two out of work actors at the tail end of the 60s desperate to escape the squalor of their flat in Camden and get away somewhere on holiday.They approach I`s rich (homosexual )uncle Monty and ask him if they can borrow his holiday home in the welsh countryside,He agrees , and after several stops to a number of pubs they set off on their way, only to get there & find that the cottage is a run down mess. What follows is a very funny experience of booze , lack of food , hostile locals & cows and a live chicken.Then Monty arrives and to I`s horror discovers that Withnail got to use the place if Monty could have his way with I & then follows a hilarious scene where Monty tries to seduce I.
My favourite part of the film is the tea room scene when Withnail marches into the place & announces 'I want the finest wines known to humanity , I want them here & I want them now' he then gets totally pissed & announces loudly to the pensioners in the cafe that he`s 'going to install a jukebox to liven up you stiffs'
Eventually they get back to find their flat taken over by their drug dealer Danny & a giant african guy which causes Withnail to ask Danny 'Whats that spade doing in my bath'.
The acting in this film is top notch , Richard E Grant has never been in a better film , Paul McGann does a great job as I , who is basically a straight man to Grant`s Withnail & Richard Griffiths is totally convincing & sympathetic as Uncle Monty.
But the best thing about this film is it is so quotable such as 'SLAPPERS' 'F*cking ponce' 'Camberwell Carrot' & 'Chin Chin'.
Not a laugh a minute comedy , but gentle & it stands up wonderfully to repeated viewings.
