It was some antiquated law to do with the performing rights society. They beleived that constant radio play for a band would inhibit record sales so a law was drawn up saying that the BBC could only play a certain amount of recorded material per day & that was only singles. If they wanted to play album tracks they had to get bands in & record them playing live hence the existence of so many things such as the John Peel Sessions & BBC recorded live concerts
