I'm 20, so it's a little before my time, but they were one of the "Three M's" that really got me into metal. Megadeth, Metallica, and Motorhead. Unlike a lot of kids my age, I never had a dreaded "nu metal phase."

I don't think that Mustaine is really concerned about Metallica any more... hell, they're touring and playing together now, and seem to be on friendly terms.
And interestingly, while they helped you get into extreme metal, they helped me get into punk. Once I got past Dave's "singing," I really started looking into his influences... like, for instance, the Sex Pistols. That led me to buying
London Calling. The rest is history.
