This past Sunday, I had the great fortune to check out a new craft beer bar in mid-town. Here are the beers I tried in descending order from "party in my mouth" to "this is beer?":

1) Buffalo Bayou, Secessionist 5, Double IPA, from TX, ABV 9.1%
Usually, once a beer gets over the high 8's to low 9's in alcohol volume, it tastes like rubbing alcohol to me. Sorry y'all, I just can't hang. But, this one was so damn tasty. Very strong, but somehow managed to lessen the "bite" common in most IPAs, if that makes sense.

2) Dogfish Head, Punkin Ale, from DE, ABV 7.0%
I almost put this one below Brooklyn, but because I just happen to be in the mood for something like this, it really hit the spot and therefore gets to be number 2 on my list. This one could be dangerous...the kind of beer that tastes so pumpkiny and spicy that you might forget it had a decent alcohol content and just throw em back all night long.

3) Brooklyn, Oktoberfest, from NY, ABV 5.5%
The point of going to this bar was to try new beers, and yeah, I've had this one before, but couldn't resist getting another. An excellent Oktoberfest beer. Not as good as Sam Adams, imo, but a close second.

4) Stone, Sublimely Self Righteous, Black IPA, from CA, ABV 8.7%
Pretty sure this is the last one I drank, and so I'll admit that at this point in the night, I only ordered this one because I liked the name. Didn't even pay attention to what I was getting. I don't do super dark beers. Stouts and porters are usually a no go. This one was right on the edge. I took one look at it and knew I wasn't going to be able to drink it. However, I was pleasantly surprised when it went down pretty smoothly and didn't taste like mud. Of course that could be because I was drunk. Guess I'll just have to go back and try it again!

5) Ayinger, Oktoberfest, from Germany, ABV 5.8%
Hmm...almost fruity and very, very mild. I wish I'd had this one first, because then it probably would have tasted better. After drinking the Brooklyn, the Dogfish head, and the Buffalo Bayou before this one, it just tasted like beer flavoured water. Something better suited to summertime drinking me thinks.

6) Karbach, Rodeo Clown, Double IPA, from TX, ABV 9.5%
I'd had this beer before Sunday also, and hated it. Tasted like battery acid then and still does.

I'd recommend all you beer aficionados out there try the Secessionist 5 and the Self Righteous if you ever happen upon it. Obviously, Stone is going to be a little more accessible than the Buffalo Bayou.

Cheers!
