The whole concept of calling something "crossover" just sorta sounds like it has more to do with meathead metal fans back in the day who were too ignorant of anything besides metal to realize that a band like Slayer were heavily influenced by punk, so when bands with more obvious punk influences come along, all of a sudden it's something that needs a name, like "crossover". Any thoughts, or am I off base?
Yeah, I think crossover specifically referred to hardcore bands who added more metal into the mix over time. I don't remember anyone calling Nuclear Assault or Sacred Reich crossover at the time. It was strictly reserved for the likes of DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion of Conformity, etc.
