I personally wouldn't vote for John Mellencamp either, but if you look at the 2006 nominees - you gotta figure the frontrunners to get inducted next year will be:
Blondie, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Mellencamp.

The 2nd tier of nominees which I'd be surprised to see get inducted would be:
Cat Stevens, J. Geils Band, the Sex Pistols, The Patti Smith Group, and the Stooges

The 3rd tier of nominees that I'd be really surprised to see get inducted would be:
The Dave Clark Five, Miles Davis, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Chic, the Sir Douglas Quintet with Doug Sahm, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Joe Tex.
