Hey, by the time you finish them they may have just released the final book, so good timing on that one :P I'm facing having to read the entire series (or bits of it at least) for a 5th time, having had to do the same for the release of every one since Winter's Heart... I will say that one of them, around the 5th or 6th, is by far the worst. It drags immensely and was particularly annoying for some reason. If you find yourself enjoying it up to a particular phase of one of the books, it's worth powering through, as it does pick up again.

As for myself:

It was decided that we are going to Greece for a week in September, at which point I was presented with this book (having not really liked the TV adaptation that was done of it) and told that I HAD to read it before we went. So, begrudgingly, I picked it up... and I've loved it. It's such a wonderfully eclectic mix of relatively good-natured reserved English-family arguing (hyphens inserted for the sanity of any readers), and wonderfully.. accessible natural biology. Being written from the perspective of a young boy who grew up to be a rather distinguished natural historian and biologist, it is enlightening how his simple but insatiable appetite for seeing how animals live and interact started, as much as it is mind-boggling how he didn't get hurt more often, or even more confusing, how on earth his mother managed to pay for the lifestyle they led!

The humour of the author's childhood and his perspective of his family, combined with great characters, a simple and forthright narrative, and an evocative atmosphere of a lazy yet lively Corfu makes for a fantastic read.

In my humble opinion, at least :P
