I never had a real problem with the FM iPod transmitter in Toronto. I think it was set to 88.1 or some empty frequency really low on the dial. The only gripe I had was that the sound was tinny and sometimes had static.
My car is a 2000 and came with a CD/cassette deck in the stereo, I guess because tapes were still relatively popular but CDs were becoming the norm.
