To be fair to the guy, when you're into loads of different bands it could be very time consuming and inconvenient sifting through the promotional emails - if you like to find information in a clear and designated place, the idea of the website is better in this respect.
I think another advantage is that there may be releases that catch your eye that you weren't previously interested in - for instance, if you've had no opinion at all of, say Maroon 5 but read in their new album description they were leaving the pop rock sound behind them and wanted to go for a folk/bluegrass sound, you'd obviously feel interested, information that subscribing only to the emails you've actively selected isn't as good.
