i was watching a special on the public broadcast station (PBS) about the history of protest in music called Get Up Stand Up, and it brought up mc5 quite a bit when they got to that era and how there was a huge protest concert in Chicago that was supposed to be like woodstock with tons of bands there to perform supporting the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, but they were the only band with enough balls to actually show up and play. a pretty good quote i found regarding mc5 that i think fits with this discussion is "whether considered hippies or punk, they definetly had the essential elements of what would later become punk rock: noise, politics and attitude." - pete blackwell
