The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Originally my friend and I were going to watch my newly purchased copy of
Seven Samurai, but it was late and he had to be up for work at 8 am and the movie is long so we settled on this instead. It's a Westernized version of the aforementioned film and it made me come to one sad realization about myself and to a lesser extent the state of movies today, that we're all cynical bastards. Throughout the movie I kept on catching myself thinking "oh jeez, this is soooo corny, there's guys are just absolute pillars of virtue" because that's what they are. I mean sure they do technically kill people, but at the end of the day, 5 out of the 7 mercenaries are just good guys, badasses of iconic stature, but good guys none the less. I kind of felt ashamed of myself for originally thinking that was corny, I mean is it totally realistic? Not really, but it's really enjoyable to watch and just makes you smile, and when it comes to escapism that's a major plus. This is definitely one of those classics that just stands the test of time, definitely see it if you haven't already.
