A friend of mine who actually let me borrow Speaker said the same thing. Apparently Xenocide is quite underwhelming as well. Although I've only heard great things about Shadow. I might just do that.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
One word. EPIC. Awesome fantasy novel (I don't usually read fantasy). I was talked in to reading this by a co-worker who seems to know his books quite well. It's amazing. It left little to be desired and made me want to slap myself for dismissing fantasy for so long.
