What other films of his have you seen? His films do take a bit to sink into (pretend that it doesn't sound pretentious when I say that). Europa is another similar cinematographical feat like Melancholia, and Dogville along with Breaking the Waves are beautiful. Not to mention Riget (The Kingdom), albeit a television show, is another fantastic (and unfortunately, incomplete
) work of his that I would recommend.
