I think Layne was an above average vocalist and Vedder is in the same league. I like your analogy of scott stapp and Weiland, i think they both tried to emulate what was popular instead of creating their own style. I think Chris Cornell has the best voice of any grunge artist, hes almost operatic at times and he can really wail.
