You listened to the wrong album, that one is his experimental album and it stands completely apart from his others. While that one is electro pop pretty much all of his other stuff is very akin to Elliott Smith(though nowhere near as good in my opinion).

If you want just guitar and vocals...definitely listen to Seven Swans or Michigan. Illinoise! Is fantastic too, but for just simple guitar and vocals, you have to listen to those two.
