It's one of my favorite Dylan albums, the lyrics are gut-wrenching, I feel you on that, but the emotion in his voice, it just never really reflects the subject matter in my opinion. But listen to Jerry Garcia sing
Twist of Fate from
Blood on the Tracks and it seems like so much more depth is added to the song.
Young, on the other hand, I hear the sincerity in his voice on a track like
A Man Needs a Maid. The emotional honesty in his voice combined with the facetiousness of the lyrics actually give the song depth and meaning that seem to be missing from just the lyrics alone.
