That's what I thought too, it reminded me old '80's actin movies like The Exterminator, The Toxic Avenger, Vigilante, and Street Trash. Basically the low budget high violence exploitation action movies of the 1980's that depict urban blight and decay and try to have some kind of message attached. I think too many people went into Hobo With a Shotgun expecting it to just borrow the aesthetic of those movies, not to actually try and mimic it.
