I'm sure some people are going to get mad and talk **** to me for saying this, Beefheart kind of reminds me of Dylan in the way that they both had odd voices, they both wrote some strange songs, Dylan was just backed by more conventional music. I think a song like "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" is somewhat Beefheart-esque.

To quote Frank Zappa:

"Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues was a monster record. I heard that thing and I was jumping all over the car. And then when I heard the one after that, "Like a Rolling Stone", I wanted to quit the music business because I felt if this wins and does what it's supposed to do, I don't need to do anything. It sold, but nobody really responded to it the way that they should have."

I think Zappa saw the somewhat experimental qualities in Dylan's music - compared to popular music at the time.
