Hmm, I think it's possibly more like she's never cared about the world outside of her own. Also, if you're judging her behavior in the interview I posted keep in mind that it's nearly 30 years old. You probably weren't born yet, let alone old enough to judge other people's attitudes or know what was cliche. I don't think she's more of a cliche than most people are, in their ways. And I don't think she presents any point for us to 'get' or to 'miss'.
I guess I've liked her ever since I was a teenager and I wasn't even particularly angsty. I never thought of her attitude as revolutionary but I've always thought she's cool.
