However in my 20s I became absolutely petrified of rejection, so instead of asking out women who were actually available I would instead ask out women that already had boy-friends so I could then rationalize
'Hey she wasn't rejecting me, she already has a boy-friend'.
For instance when I was working at some fast-food joint just out of school I bought flowers for one of the pretty brunette cashier girls even though she already had a boy-friend.
Another time I bought tickets to a concert for me and another cute dish-water blonde chick I had a real big crush on, even though she already had a boy-friend.
