I don't fully understand how it seems that this branding and ranking system is acceptable when talking about hip-hop.
You wouldn't have a thread in the indie and alternative section asking for who the best 'indie band of all time' are, or who your top 10 were, it's not an articulate discussion, it's just lists which most of the time don't make any logical sense.
What is the criteria behind these hip-hop lists, what are the positions of the acts in ones list made up of. There is no definitive ranking process, so as these lists are all going by different criteria; evaluating others lists and making your own are completely invalid concepts.
But there seems to be this compulsion with hip-hop to say this artist > that artist.
