It's hardly surprising. Pop music centres around the concept of the hook. They are engineered to be catchy and interesting to the majority. The simple fact is that the majority of humans are not musically inclined. In the past, music was relatively limited to those who wanted to listen to music. Since the iPod, it became fashionable to like music... greater target audience, greater sales. Pop music is an industry, one that makes a gem every now and then, but an industry none the less.
