I felt like I missed something the first time I read
House of Leaves so I'm planning to read it again, but each story at a time, instead of alternating between Traunt's footnotes and Zamponos write up on the Navidson Record. Also, I still haven't read the Index, The Whalestoe letters or look at any of the codes throughout the book, which apparently sheds some light on some of the characters.
On the face of it though, it still a great psychological horror. Stayed up six in the morning reading it since I was too scared to go to sleep.
