British pop & American pop are 2 totally different things. The last female pure British pop act to sell any great number of records worldwide before them was Bananarama almost 14 years earlier.Which was why even the record companies were saying to their managers 'Don't Do This'.
It was almost like girl groups were grunge & boy bands were hair metal.
14 years? Where do you get that figure from? Bananarama where far from forgotten and still released records. As I said and will say again it was just a matter of the pendulum swinging back in favour of girl groups again, hardly revolutionary. And anyway it's been claimed The Spice Girls are important as they made it big in America, where girl groups were already doing well. And also what about other British girl groups of the 90s like Eternal? Girl groups have always been around for decades, it's just that sometimes that get a big hit record and make the news and sometimes they don't.

And then it is claimed that The Spice Girls are important as they had some copycat groups. Well acts that sell records always have other groups who follow them, doesn't mean that they or those who follow them are that significant. But it was also said here that they couldn't repeat what The Spice Girls did. So does that mean they are irrelevant then? You can't have it both ways and say it is important these groups followed them and then say they weren't actually any good.
