Sorry, I just don't see the huge difference. R&B is easily the biggest influence on pop music in the past 20 years or so to the point where there is basically nothing that distinguishes R&B as a style unto itself. Boy and girl groups in particular are very much R&B influenced.

Actually I would say the Sex Pistols probably did somewhat pave the way for bands like Ratt, but that's a separate issue.
