And used game sales has existed for a LONG time, so it's not like some new fad. Why's it a big deal all the sudden now? This won't stop me buying used games (well it wouldn't, if I had a PS3) because most of the time I couldn't care less about multiplayer.

I like how you talk of the "game industry" being one sole entity out to get us. Just because activision milks people doesn't mean it's the norm, example being valve who now released team fortress 2 for free.
Game sales are also much bigger then they were 10-15 years ago, and thanks to the internet, are really the only disc-based media still selling. Movies and music sure aren't selling hard copies.
Game developers work ridiculously hard hours, I'm not going to assume that their motivation for wanting to sell their game is inherently mischievous.
