I'm not sure if this is slightly off-topic to exclude god from the equation. I kind of feel that any lack of free will is unconsciously self-imposed. It seems to be human nature to live our lives rigidly enforcing our own beliefs. We can experience brief interludes of lucidity when our current belief system breaks down but it is soon replaced by something equally as rigid and we are apt to outrageous levels of self-deception and mental gymnastics in order to conform any new information to our world view.
