I'm not trying to be condescending, but I'm kind of being forced to I feel like. In a forum with tens of thousands of user, I don't see the necessity to mod someone who has only been here a few months.

Tens of thousands of registered users is not the same thing as tens of thousands of
active users. There are probably only a couple dozen active users who are logged in often enough to be mods. Then the number goes down a bit when you're looking for people who aren't too hot-headed. Then it goes down even further when you consider logistics like trying to find people who tend to be logged in during times of day when we don't have much mod coverage. Then, from that diminishing pool of candidates, you have to find people who actually
want to be mods, and believe me I've seen quite a few people turn down offers. In the end you're left with only a handful of potential mods so I think your assumption that there are people beating down the door for the job is pretty far off base.
