I'm really getting into Robert Schumann lately. Scenes from Childhood (Kinderszenen) is a great place to start. It's eclectic, untaxing on the listener, and chock full of melody. I'm planning on learning the whole thing this summer!

This is Martha Argerich's interpretation of pieces 5-9 of the suite. Piece 7, Traumerei (Dreaming) is quite famous.

Also, regarding the previous discussion on Beethoven's possible fondness of Romantic music- I think it's rather irrelevant to his classification as a composer, as many Romantic composers disagreed with each other! In fact, there were two camps of Romantic composers, the moderate romantics (Schumann, Brahms, etc) and the more 'radical' romantics (Liszt, Wagner, and such.)
But again, I could see either opinion as valid.
